mcgillin's ale house

We realize that wait times are sometimes long — thank you for your patience. PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania (WPVI) -- McGillin's Olde Ale House, considered the oldest continuously-operating tavern in Philadelphia, has a 164-year-long history. We try to keep this listed up-to-date but please forgive us if it’s not 100% updated. McGillin’s Genuine Lager – Can only be found at McGillin’s and Troegs Independent Brewing. This golden Helles lager is smooth and satisfying with a clean malt character reminiscent of fresh-baked bread. German hops add a hint of floral notes and subtle bitterness, while lager yeast lends a crisp, refreshing finish.

Its light body and tart profile make it refreshing, with notes of cherry and lime showcasing what vacation should taste like. Philadelphia has undoubtedly changed throughout the years, but McGillin’s bar has remained true to its roots. The architecture of the building is timeless; large yellow windows complement the red bricks that make up the establishment.

Awesome Things to Eat at Reading Terminal Market in Philadelphia

"The truth is the people, I love meeting people." In 2013, Gourmet magazine called McGillin's one of the three coolest bars in the United States. Initially called The Bell in Hand, the famous pub opened its doors in 1860 in the home of Irish immigrant William "Pa" McGillin, the owner and operator of the establishment. It was nicknamed McGillin's by those who frequented the establishment, and the bar took on the title as its official name. J.E. Caldwell, a jeweler in business since 1839, closes.

Continental Restaurant & Martini Bar

He once served two men a couple of martinis and some stout beers and was shocked when they left him a $500 tip — his biggest ever — which he split with the other bartender working that day. Thankfully, our team came hungry because the chef spoiled us. They served us crab cakes and mussels, both perfectly paired with a cold Cape May Orange Crushin’ It and Bay Daze. The food and beers at McGillin’s will not disappoint and the menu has an array of choices. John Doyle is considered an icon in Philadelphia. The beloved McGillin's bartender is credited with being a matchmaker, saving marriages and pouring countless drinks while working at Philadelphia's oldest continually operating tavern.

While young 20-somethings fill the place for karaoke on Friday nights, happy hours at McGgillin’s are typically filled with a very diverse crowd. Doyle earned a "Best of Philly" award in 2010 when he was named the city's best bartender, and his wife, Laura Doyle, said all these years later she doesn't mind sharing him with the rest of the city. As Doyle gets ready to turn 80, he's scaled back his schedule to one day a week, but he's now worked for three generations of owners, and his tenure has spanned eight Philadelphia mayors.

McGillin’s is only closed a few days a year  – and Thanksgiving is one of them. Stop by on July 14 to celebrate Bastille Day with half priced French Onion Soup. Pair with a glass of red wine   – only $6 all day every day. McGillin’s Real Ale – Brewed exclusively for McGillin’s and inspired by Troeg’s HopBack Amber, which has been discontinued in 2021.

This deep amber-colored ale boasts flavors of grapefruit and pine balanced by a hint of spice and complex malty notes of caramel and toffee. The use of whole flower hops creates a bright, citrusy aroma. But his big break came when the downstairs bartender broke abottle over an unruly customer’s head (the patron had reachedbehind the bar to serve himself). Doyle had to cover the bar whenhis coworker was hauled out by police in handcuffs. Henjes said Doyle is so proud of his job he hands out his business card to everyone he meets (he gave me one after I interviewed him at McGillin’s this week, in case I forgot where he worked or why I was there). They married in 1970 and had twin daughters six years later.

Don’t expect lighting-speed service if your visit falls during a weekend or weeknight special (which is basically every day, considering there’s always something on offer). That said, the staff hustle hard to keep service moving. If you can, seek out a barstool in front of barman John Doyle, who’s as much legend as the place itself (he’s been behind the bar at McGillin’s for more than 40 years). Typically includes Pumpkin Martinis, Oktoberfest beers and a rotating list of German  and pumpkin food specials including Pumpkin Mac & Cheese, Pork Pumpkin Apple Cider.

During a Philadelphia Phillies, Philadelphia Eagles, Philadelphia 76ers, Philadelphia Union, or Philadelphia Flyers game, it can be expected that the bell will be rung when the home team scores. Shortly after the Liberty Bell cracked and long before ground was broken for City Hall, McGillin’s Olde Ale House threw open its doors. Its beer taps have been flowing since 1860 — making it the oldest continuously operating tavern in Philadelphia. McGillin’s has outlasted Strawbridge’s, the Civil War and even Prohibition. McGillin’s celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2010. Going to Philadelphia’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade?

McGillin’s month-long Oktoberfest celebration continues through the Midtown Village Fall Festival. We’ll serve a rotating list of Oktoberfest beers, pumpkin beers and a rotating list of German food specials. We’ll be closed on the 4th of July – 1 of only 6 nights a year that we close so staff can celebrate the holiday with family & friends).

Sign added to McGillin’s collection of iconic signs. America celebrates 100th Anniversary, The Centennial. John Wanamaker Department Store opens around the corner from McGillin’s (now Macy’s). Wanamaker sign part of McGillin’s collection of iconic Philadelphia signs. Catherine & William McGillin opened the Bell in Hand Tavern. The Irish immigrants, who raised their 13 children upstairs, soon become known as “Ma” and “Pa” and the laborers who frequented the bar called it “McGillin’s.” The nicknames eventually stuck.

They now own the historic tavern with their son, Christopher Mullins, Jr. McGillin’s Olde Ale House opened in 1860 and has survived not 1, but 2 pandemics — one in 1918 and the other in 2020! Owner Chris Mullins, Sr. locked the doors on March 16, 2020 (1 day before St Patrick’s Day) and then gleefully re-opened them about a year later. Modelo has paired with the International Rescue Committee, an NGO that responds to humanitarian crises and helps people rebuild their lives. More than 100 years ago, Christopher’s grandparents immigrated to America making McGillin’s especially proud to be part of this campaign that helps immigrants get a fighting chance here.

The ambiance inside transports you back to the 1860s. Dark wood paneling, vintage photographs, and antique decorations adorn the walls, creating an authentic and cozy atmosphere. Whether you’re a regular coming in for their daily happy hour special, or you’re a first-timer, you’ll feel right at home. From the kind bartenders, to the attentive waitstaff, to the generous management team that took time out of their day to speak with us, McGillin's employees are the bread and butter of the restaurant. As with most bars and restaurants whose reputations precede them, crowds are commonplace at McGillin’s.

4.3% alcohol/21 IBU.McGillin’s 1860 IPA – Brewed exclusively for McGillin’s and inspired by Troegs’ Hop Knife. This hop-forward IPA is fresh and aromatic with bold notes of citrus and tropical fruit courtesy of six different varieties of classic American hops. Three house specialties — McGillin’s Real Ale; McGillin’s Genuine Lager and McGillin’s 1860 IPA — are brewed by Troegs Independent Brewing. McGillin’s 1860 IPA – Was originally launched on McGillin’s 150th anniversary in 2010.

Celebrate this Mexican holiday at an Irish fiesta! If you ever visit McGillin’s — and you should if you can — their exclusive McGillin’s 1860 IPA is the beer to order. Back when I was in college they had some sort of ridiculous Friday night wings special — 100 wings for $10? — that never ceased to seem too good to be true. But it’s interacting with everyday people that Doyle loves best. On Saturdays and on St. Patrick’s Day and New Year’s Day.

Spotlight On: McGillin's Olde Ale House

Besides being one of the oldest bars in Philly, McGillin’s in Midtown Village is also the entire city’s favorite place to day drink and watch sports. If you’re in Philly during football or baseball season and can’t get tickets to the real thing, there’s no better place to be. They also have a fireplace, so it’s especially useful in the winter when all of the outdoor beer gardens are closed and day drinking options have dwindled.

McGillin’s served blue beer in honor of Villanova’s National Basketball Championship in 2016 and again in 2018. Le Bec Fin, which kicked off Philadelphia’s restaurant renaissance in 1970, closes and its sign is added to collection at McGillin’s. Deux Cheminees and Strawbridge & Clothiers signs added to McGillin’s collection. The former opened in 1970s and the latter in 1868. When it closes in 2008, its sign is added to McGillin’s sign collection. McGillin’s Olde Ale House celebrates 100th anniversary.

On those occasions, the bar is often packed with his regulars who’ve become friends and his friends who’ve become regulars. McGillin's Olde Ale House isn’t your average pub, and that’s apparent to anyone once they step foot inside. It’s a historic gem in the heart of Philadelphia, PA. The bar's doors have been open since 1860 and hold the title of being the oldest continuously operating tavern, along with being the third oldest in the entire United States.

October 2022 - McGillin's Serves RED Beer for 1st Time

The Sons of Ben are the first Philadelphia Union supporters club, and use the Philadelphia civic colors of light blue and yellow as opposed to the darker shades officially used by the team. The Sons of Ben began during a flurry of rumors regarding Major League Soccer’s negotiations with investors regarding a potential team in the Philadelphia region. Office parties, birthdays, anniversaries, retirement parties, holiday parties, luncheons and baptisms. That was the extent of Doyle’s application and interview process.

McGillin’s celebrates 50th anniversary with a new façade. Name officially changes to McGillin’s Olde Ale House. No pushover, Ma has a list of troublemakers who weren’t allowed in.

A few weeks later, in April 1974, he was asked to work Friday nights as a doorman and agreed. If you’re in the Philadelphia area this weekend, make sure to stop by McGillin’s! Enjoy one of our Cape May Beers on tap and indulge in some delicious food. Who knows – you might just meet the love of your life.

The celebration begins this Saturday at McGillin’s and culminates next St. Patrick’s Day, which will be Doyle’s 50th at the bar, said Christopher Mullins Jr., co-owner of McGillin’s. But his big break came when the downstairs bartender broke a bottle over an unruly customer’s head (the patron had reached behind the bar to serve himself). Doyle had to cover the bar when his coworker was hauled out by police in handcuffs. Inspired by his new gig, Doyle attended a six-week course at Ronnie’s Bartending School (he still keeps a tiny laminated copy of his 1975 diploma in his wallet) and began tending the bar upstairs at McGillin’s. “I’ve been here for 20 years and I still find something new hanging up on the walls every day. Every single picture holds some type of memory,” says Gabby Rubery, Manager of McGillin’s.

When Doyle’s wife stopped working to take care of the kids, his part-time job at McGillin’s helped supplement their income. As he told the story of how he met his wife, Laura, in the late ‘60s at the Jersey Shore, Doyle looked left, then right, and leaned in. His first job was “huckstering,” or selling tomatoes, bananas, and other produce door-to-door as a kid. From there, he worked at a Dairy Queen, a soda shop, and sold newspapers at Municipal Stadium.

That’s shortly after the Liberty Bell cracked and long before ground was broken for Philadelphia City Hall. The beer taps have been flowing since 1860 — making it the oldest continuously operating tavern in Philadelphia and one of the oldest taverns in the country. Cover charge with in/out privileges (if we have capacity). And that’s how Doyle, 79, a married father of two and grandfatherof four, came to be the longest-serving bartender at Philly’soldest-operating bar.

In 2007, the national trade magazine Nightclub and Bar included McGillin's in its Editors' Choice Top 100 bars and clubs in the United States. There is a ship bell and a cow bell behind the bar which the bartenders ring when they get a great tip. They also ring it to "gong" or "boo" a bad karaoke singer.

dwarven house

Dwarven houses can be found all across the Iron Hills, where the Dwarven population is more scattered and rural than the one at Erebor. They generate in the sides of mountains, their entrances blending in with the stone. This can make them hard to spot, especially during the day; at night, the ithildin in their Dwarven Doors glows, but even then this only happens when players get close enough. On the tables to the left and right of Artifacts are several Cogs, Actuators, and units of Dwarven Oil that you can gather to meet the requirements of the next quest objective. Soul Gems, Ruined Books, two bowls, and a tankard are also present in this room.

Exterior

Heading south from here (back towards the entrance), you will pass through another room with some stone tables and a divider. The door to the smithy is closed, giving you an extra barrier against the three bandits. Nchuanthumz is an incredibly spacious underground home that comes with many amenities when fully furnished. However, it is left to you to restore the house to its former glory.

Skyrim:Nchuanthumz

These doors are inlaid with Ithildin, however, which makes them easier to find at night. Further ahead from the entrance hall, a Skeever already lies dead. The hallway turns left and then right again before the next set of doors. The next room is vacant apart from a shallow bathing pool on the left that is fed by a working fountain; this will become the children’s room. Should you take the opened hallway, you will pass a stone table on the right and go through another opened doorway, leading to a room north of the smithy with even thicker cobwebs. A trio of Skeevers lives here and will attack you once they detect you.

Features

Pressing either the left or right button once will summon the Dwarven Sphere Overseer, while the central button revives the Manufactory with a grinding of gears as the house shakes. The Dwarven Sphere Overseer will emerge from the scuttle on the right side of the room. Follow the Dwarven Sphere Overseer and give it the repair parts by interacting with it.

Once all three sections are complete, the quest will finish and you will have a fully furnished Dwarven house. Accessed by a Dwarven lift, the stairs from the entrance area lead down to a large suspended platform which lacks railings. This platform connects to a Dwemer building with a central room that branches into two balcony rooms to the northeast and northwest. The house was designed by Sumner Spaulding in 1933 in the style of a French chateau. It was built for engineer and contractor Lynn Atkinson,[3] who commissioned the property for his wife. She found it "pretentious", so the couple never lived there.[4] The house, located on 10 acres (4 hectares), with gardens designed by Henri Samuel, later was owned by Arnold Kirkeby and then Jerry Perenchio.

Hollyhock House features an entertainment room immediately to the right of the entrance. This room contains possibly the first built-in entertainment center, complete with LP-sized cabinets along the floor. Other notable rooms include a child's play area as well as a modernist kitchen, which long housed the museum gift shop. Opening the door of a Dwarven house for the first time can grant the player the achievement "Mellon", provided they have not interacted with player-made Dwarven doors before. Three buttons on the console in front of Artifacts serve different purposes during restorations.

If you head back north, you will open the door to the master bedroom. The double bed is in fact functional, but another Skeever lurks down the hall to the left so you will likely not get any sleep just yet. The way to the manufactory is to go towards the Skeevers and back to the western (left-hand side) of the house to continue on.

We have in-house painters who stay very busy with all of our paint requests. If you would like a quote on something painted, please send us a message. When you first enter Nchuanthumz, it is a badly neglected Dwarven Ruin strewn with cobwebs and infested by Skeevers.

Preserving the built environment - including buildings, landscapes, and archaeological sites - is a way to remember and learn from the past. Throughout the country as well as in Washington, DC, women often initiated preservation efforts. The Dumbarton House, located in Georgetown, is one example of women preserving historic sites in the capital city. Artifacts died before he could revive the Manufactory, but the instructions he left will direct you to press the left or right button on the console and summon the Dwarven Sphere Overseer. Artifacts’ directions give you the list of items that the Overseer will need to reactivate the Manufactory. After this part of the quest is finished, the Manufactory has no further use.

The journal lists the items required to repair the assembly lines, with the required items being one Dwarven oil, three Dwemer cogs, and three Dwemer Actuators. You should already have one Dwemer Actuator from Artifacts’ own inventory; the other two are on the two tables on either side of the room, alongside the cogs and the oil. Collect all the required items and activate the Dwarven Sphere Overseer button. The quest markers will direct you to press either the right or left button to do so.

Armies of the West is an improvement submod for DaC, improving the Numenorean and some Elven units, as well as fix some errors in both scripts and models. In the future, there will be a port to MOS. Like many houses designed by Wright, Hollyhock House proved to be better as an aesthetic work than as a livable dwelling. Water tended to flow over the central lawn and into the living room, and the flat roof terraces were conceived without an understanding of Los Angeles's rains. The cantilevered concrete also did not stand up well to the area's earthquakes.

The building first opened its doors at the start of the Gilded Age, when the surrounding White Mountains were rapidly transforming into a premier vacation hotspot. Artists in particular were among the people to visit the most frequently, often staying in barns while seeking unique natural landmarks to paint. Recognizing the economic potential all those tourists represented, local entrepreneurs began to construct their own inns and hotels. Two people to pursue this line of work were Cyrus and Marcia Gale, who converted their family’s farmhouse in Jackson, New Hampshire, into a hotel called the “Eagle Mountain House” during the 1870s. The Gale’s farm quickly became one of the most popular places to stay in the region, especially since it was located deep in the wilderness. In fact, most guests could only reach the retreat after following a trail that cut deep through the verdant woodland outside of downtown Jackson.

(Other changes he implemented involved installing such iconic features like the expansive verandah and historic elevator.) But Arthur’s momentous stewardship of the Eagle Mountain House came to an unfortunate end with his death in 1957. His sister, Marcia Gale Chadbourne, and her family carried on his legacy for the next few decades, until her retirement during the 1970s. The Chadbournes subsequently sold their interest in the resort to a new ownership group, thus marking the end of nearly 90 years of continuous operation by the same family. Nevertheless, the Eagle Mountain House managed to preserve its fantastic reputation.

Titanic vs Modern Cruise Ship: How Do They Compare?

ocean liner vs cruise ship

This era saw intense competition among shipping companies, leading to the creation of ever more grandiose ships. A cruise on board a ship is a vacation sailing not that far from the shore and calling from port to port. An ocean liner cruise is a grand voyage – a crossing from point A to point B over vast open waters. For guests who had paid more for their tickets and were in a higher class, the onboard experience could be compared a modern cruise ship.

Cruise ships can cross large bodies of water and frequently do so during repositioning cruises. However, they aren’t designed for repeatedly traveling cross-continental sailings. Ocean liners are designed to navigate swiftly through the water — a necessity for maintaining scheduled voyages between specific ports. The only one still in operation is the Queen Mary 2, which is owned by Cunard Line. Queen Mary 2 frequently makes trans-atlantic cruises, along with smaller travels from South Hampton and New York.

Q2: Can I Cruise Alone? Are There Single Cabins?

Surprisingly, the draft of large ships like the Titanic and modern cruise ships hasn’t changed significantly. For instance, the Titanic had a draft of 33 ft. (10 m), allowing it to navigate deep waters comfortably, whereas modern cruise ships like Icon of the Seas have a slightly lower draft of 30 ft. (9 m). On average, around ten new cruise ships have been built every year since 2001, and demand for cruising is at an all-time high, while construction of ocean liners has ceased completely. Ocean liners are designed to withstand rough weather conditions and continue their scheduled voyages, while cruise ships may alter their itineraries or adjust their speed to avoid adverse weather. Ocean liners are designed for transportation between continents, focusing on speed, durability, and reliability.

Ocean Liner vs Cruise Ship – What are the Differences?

For instance, Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas has a beam of 159 ft (48 m), and the Wonder of the Seas measures slightly narrower at 155 ft. (47 m). Even Royal Caribbean’s smallest ship, the Majesty of the Seas, has a beam of 105 ft. (32 m), which still exceeds the Titanic’s width by quite a lot. The Titanic was shorter than modern cruise ships, stretching around 882 ft. (269 m) in length. In comparison, the Icon of the Seas measures a notable 1,196 ft. (364 m) long, and the Wonder of the Seas isn’t far behind at 1,188 ft. (362 m). Both of these modern cruise ships exceed the length of the Titanic by over 300 ft. (about 91 m).

If the passenger paid for tickets that were budget-friendly, the voyage will not include many extras. Since both ships have different purposes, they are designed very differently. Two rival companies, Hamburg America Line (often referred to as "HAPAG") and Norddeutscher Lloyd, competed in Germany. The First and Second World Wars dealt much damage to the two companies, both forced to renounce their ships to the winning side in both wars. From the majestic beauty of the ship itself to the diverse cultures and natural wonders it allows you to explore, a cruise liner voyage is a unique and enriching journey. With ongoing innovations in sustainability, technology, and passenger experience, these vessels will continue to captivate and cater to future generations of explorers.

Today's cruise ships are famous for their boxy appearance and more recently, their often uncanny resemblance to hotels. All of this is because the objective of their construction has changed. Namely, cruise lines need ships to offer the most and highest quality amenities to the maximum number of people at the lowest cost.

Cruise ships have shorter size bow when compared and less strong hull as it doesn’t go much deep into the open ocean. The looks are much more important for this ship rather than strength due to its difference in need. Because the weather was likely to be sunny and fine, the ship did not have to be built as sturdily as an ocean liner. Between 1987 and 2022, the maximum cruise ship size has increased from 73,000 gross tons to 236,857 gross tons.

Cruise ships prioritize fuel efficiency and comfort, allowing for more relaxed and leisurely journeys. Since most passengers are onboard for the transportation rather than the joy of being at sea, it helps for liners to be fast, too. In order to meet these requirements, ocean liners tend to have deeper drafts, longer bows, higher free boards and be made of stronger materials. The shift in consumer demand has played a pivotal role as today’s passengers are often more intrigued by the variety of experiences available on board a cruise ship than using ships for transportation. The affordability of airline travel has made passenger travel by ship a memory of the past.

Advantages of Cruise Ships

While often used interchangeably, the differences between an ocean liner vs a cruise ship are stark. They are two different vessels that, while similar, still offer a world of difference when it comes to size, build, and experience. Therefore, I hope that the article was informative and that the differences between cruise ships and ocean liners are clear to the readers. Most transatlantic voyages are seven nights without any port stops. If you think you will suffer from seasickness on the open ocean, pack the remedy that works best for you. Ocean Liners are designed to undertake a line voyage, between point A and point B across a large expanse of open ocean.

Features like expansive pool decks, theaters, multiple dining options, and comprehensive wellness facilities cater to every aspect of enjoyment and leisure. Their goal is not expedited transit but to provide enjoyable, leisurely journeys. Ocean liners are explicitly built for speed, safety, and durability to complete long-distance sailings in the open ocean.

Modern ships are built with better materials and have advanced safety features like improved lifeboats, better construction, and fire safety systems. For those traveling in second class, the experience was more modest but still comfortable, with tickets costing $60, or about $1,834 today. The most economical option was third class, which catered primarily to immigrants and lower-income passengers. A ticket in third class cost just $35, or about $1,071 today, providing basic accommodations.

In 1897, Norddeutscher Lloyd launched SS Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse. The ship was both luxurious and fast, managing to steal the Blue Riband from the British.[33] She was also the first of the fourteen ocean liners with four funnels that have emerged in maritime history. The ship needed only two funnels, but more funnels gave passengers a feeling of safety and power.[34] In 1900, the Hamburg America Line competed with its own four-funnel liner, SS Deutschland. The category does not include ferries or other vessels engaged in short-sea trading, nor dedicated cruise ships where the voyage itself, and not transportation, is the primary purpose of the trip.

It has a gross tonnage of 248,663 and a passenger capacity of 7,600. The ship embarked on its maiden voyage on January 27, 2024 from PortMiami. Oceanliners are not made for luxury and have very high speed while travelling mainly around 30 knots. An example of an ocean liner is the RMS Queen Mary 2, which travel on transatlantic voyages.

Initially, they were designed for transport and mail delivery across seas. Since the Titanic tragically sank over a century ago, more than 20 cruise ships and ocean liners have also sunk. Just like the Titanic, these ships faced various challenges and unfortunate circumstances that led to their sinking.

This went beyond a simple Caronia-style light green hull repaint (later changed to white). They maintained their transatlantic routes to Canada in the summer, but during winter turned to cruising the Caribbean and Mediterranean. However, both were eventually laid up in 1971 and sold off to new owners. At the same time, though, it means that today's purpose built cruise ships don't fare well in harsh weather. While ocean liners once powered through some of the most extreme weather the ocean can deliver, cruise ships handle weather differently. Cruise ships can avoid bad weather by canceling or changing ports of call or going around weather systems, which is common during the Atlantic hurricane season.

Cruise ship hit by rogue wave during storm, loses ability to navigate

norwegian cruise ship rogue wave

But as the day went on, the waves got bigger until they were large enough to spray her window on the sixth deck, she said. "Our team are working to arrange onward travel back home for guests onboard," the statement added. The ship, traveling under its own power, is currently sailing to Bremerhaven, Germany, for disembarkation, HX said in an updated statement Friday. The ship was in the North Sea at the time, in an area hit by a storm late Thursday with hurricane-force gusts forecast to continue Friday, the Danish Meteorological Institute said according to Reuters.

Passengers are “anxious to get to port” and injuries were “minimal,” the British woman said. Another clip shared on X showed the view of the terrifying swells from the glamorous windows of an on-board suit, which tilted precariously toward the water between each wave. None of the 266 passengers or 131 crew members were seriously injured, HX said. He studied marine biology at the University of Exeter before training to become a journalist. He covers a wide range of topics including space exploration, planetary science, space weather, climate change, animal behavior, evolution and paleontology.

The wave smashed at least two windows on the bridge of the more than 16,000-ton ship, and the incoming seawater knocked out the navigation system and radar. It threw the ship with 266 passengers and 131 crew into darkness as the power failed, according to local media and the cruise line HX. The MS Maud was en route to Tilbury, England, from Florø, Norway, when the wave hit, causing the vessel to temporarily lose power. The Norwegian cruise ship MS Maud suffered a power outage after a rogue wave shattered windows on the bridge while it sailed in the North Sea, causing the vessel to lose its ability to navigate, Danish authorities and the ship’s owner said on Thursday. The Norwegian cruise ship MS Maud temporarily lost power on Thursday after encountering the rogue wave.

A Norwegian cruise liner carrying hundreds of passengers weathered a “terrifying” storm before a rogue wave temporarily took out its power, stomach-churning footage showed. Lawrence added that while in their muster stations, passengers were given "survival suits" — or suits that "dramatically extend survival times" with insulation, per the Coast Guard. "The situation started with the ship's horn sounding for an extremely long time, then the PA system came on, and we just heard scuffling and general moving around noises," Lawrence said. Then, passengers heard the alarm that meant they should head to their muster stations — the place on board where guests gather in case of an emergency. "Following ongoing safety checks and technical assessments, given the weather conditions, we decided to amend the planned sailing route," the HX spokesperson said.

One terrified passenger told the Daily Mail they instantly knew something was off once the massive wave rattled the ship. Stomach-churning footage of massive waves battering the vessel in the North Sea have gone viral. The boat has now been diverted to Bremerhaven, Germany, and was around 230 nautical miles out as of 10 a.m. EST, the boat is passing by Denmark at eight knots and facing 14.5 mph winds.

Such freak accidents may seem rare, but hundreds have occurred without warning around the world — on cruise ships, cargo vessels, oil platforms and beaches. Rogue waves are freak waves that are at least twice as high as the surrounding sea state — the average height of the waves for a given area at a given time, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The massive walls of water come from seemingly out of nowhere and without warning. Local media reported that about 200 people disembarked in Norway due to the bad weather before the accident.

"The condition of the ship remains stable and the crew are able to sail under their own power," a spokesperson for HX said. "There were about 20 minutes in which I thought the ship might capsize, it was rocking so much and we had no idea what had happened," an American passenger posted on X, formerly Twitter. We were talking to the officers and they estimated the waves were 15 to 20 meters,” he said.

The couple planned to travel back to Hamburg for an early morning flight to Frankfurt and then finally back to the UK, where they expected to arrive in London on Christmas Eve. He said one person was hurt on the ship, owned by Hurtigruten Expeditions. "Sorry for those whose Christmas treat has been spoiled. However, crew on board Maud have been exemplary in looking after us in what was initially quite a tricky situation," Roberts said. MacRae said the cruise line would be providing flights to London — where it was originally supposed to end its journey. The stations are located on decks five to eight, which are above sea level and near the lifeboats on level seven.

The storm also brought down trees and prompting warnings of flooding on the North Sea coast. A woman in Belgium was fatally injured by a falling Christmas tree, while another tree killed a person in the Netherlands. "An Esvagt ship is towing it slowly towards Bremerhafen in Germany at around 8-9 knots," the spokesperson told Reuters.

A British traveler saw a massive wave hit her Norwegian cruise ship minutes before all 299 passengers were ordered to hunker down in muster stations for hours as the boat battled 11-meter waves and gale-force winds. After the wave hit, passengers heard around five seconds of noise over the PA system and roughly five minutes later, the emergency alarm was sounded and passengers began making their way down to muster stations. They were told to put on bright orange survival suits, which are wind and waterproof, and life vests. "Spent 4 hours in survival suits and life vests while the Danish Coastguard and local oil rigs sent out rescue boats to escort us and provide navigation as the crew manually steered the boat from the engine room," one passenger wrote on Facebook. "Hands down, one of the scariest nights of my life in gale force winds and 11 meter (36 feet) waves." Hansen said the wave was the same one that hit a nearby cruise ship, the Maud, at about the same time.

But they were in the middle of the North Sea when heart-stopping wave came crashing down around 4 p.m. “It really hit home when they started handing out orange survival suits to everyone,” Lawrence explained. Two civilian support vessels are aiding the ship in its journey to port, Danish rescue authorities said. Because of a lack of navigational abilities, the ship had to be steered manually from the engine room, per the news agency.

It is currently unclear if the wave that hit the Viking Polaris qualifies as an official rogue wave because there is no accurate data on the wave height or the surrounding sea state. A storm was raging when the wave hit, CNN reported, which could have provided the necessary conditions for a rogue wave to form. Rough weather in the North Sea churned up massive waves which battered a cruise ship in the North Sea. A Norwegian cruise ship sailing in the North Sea on Thursday lost its ability to navigate after it was hit by a rogue wave during a storm. Authorities’ update comes as stomach-churning footage of massive waves battering the vessel in the North Sea have gone viral, including a clip of the rogue wave that reportedly shattered windows and knocked out power aboard the MS Maud. The Danish Joint Rescue Coordination Centre said in a statement to NBC News the ship's crew is navigating the vessel manually via emergency systems, and that two civilian support ships are helping to navigate the waters in the North Sea.

The Ucluelet wave is regarded as the most extreme rogue wave because it was around three times higher than surrounding waves, while the Draupner wave was only around twice as tall compared with the surrounding sea state. The video shows the rogue wave ahead of the Otto Sverdrup off the coast of Germany on Friday. The ship is over 450 feet long, 70 feet wide, almost 16,000 tons, and has eight decks, and still, the freak wave dwarfed the ship.

A rogue wave and high winds combined to briefly knock out power and the navigation system on a luxury Norwegian cruise Thursday, Danish authorities and the ship’s owner said. “The wave essentially hit us side-on and just exploded up over the top of the ship,” MacRae told The Post Friday. “Other passengers reported that the officer who hit the emergency alert was completely soaked. "At this time, the ship has confirmed that no serious passenger or crew injuries have been sustained as a result of the incident and the condition of the ship remains stable," the statement said. A spokesperson for HX, a unit of Norway's Hurtigruten Group, told FOX Business that the ship is sailing to Bremerhaven, Germany, for disembarkation. “Following ongoing safety checks and technical assessments, given the weather conditions, we decided to amend the planned sailing route.

“I’ll be honest, there was about 20 minutes yesterday where I thought the ship might capsize, it was rolling so heavily and we didn’t have any idea what had happened,” she said. Tour operator Thorsten Hansen shared a video of the foamy waves battering the hull of the MS Maud, which made headlines Thursday when its electricity failed mid-voyage. Support vessels are working with the ship as it continues to head toward the port city in northern Germany, according to the company. Reuters reported earlier Friday, citing a Danish Joint Rescue Coordination Centre official, that another ship had assisted with a tow.

Carnival Cruise Reviews 2024 UPDATED: Ratings of Carnival Cruise Line

cruise critic carnival

How you remembered so much detail about so many different aspects of the cruise is truly impressive, and your communication style and thread organization deserve a bravo (or WAHOO! on Carnival). I agree there is a lot to like and I enjoyed my cruise; not sure I would choose Venezia again until I read of improvements. We bought the middle tier of internet service (“Value”), which seemed to work fine. Certain websites were blocked, like known video and music streaming sites. I could not connect to my home VPN using OpenVPN (port 1194). Surprisingly, I could connect to one well known public VPN, but if I name it, I will probably be the last to be able to use it.

More about Carnival Celebration

On the plus side, in my estimation, most of the dining room dinner menu was available in the buffet. Families will adore the Carnival Horizon cruise, which boasts a huge variety of cabins for multiple passengers and larger groups, nighttime babysitting, a flashy splash park, outdoor and indoor activities, and great kids clubs. Dining rooms feature kids menus and some of the specialty restaurants include reduced prices for kids under 12.

How much does it cost to go on Carnival Magic?

To be fair, Carnival should make it easier to indicate multiple passengers or that space is needed for wheelchairs/scooters. I am willing to believe the engineers did the math and the average wait is shorter this way, but passengers may not individually perceive that. What it all adds up to is a Carnival cruise experience that delivers the affordable Fun Ship experience that people love, with a dash of sophistication that never crosses the line into snooty.

Port Reviews

This was the first cruise I’ve been on where dining room tables don’t get tablecloths. You are expected to re-use your silverware for all courses, which we learned when servers just put it aside when clearing dishes. At dinner, waiters don’t hesitate to reach over the table to serve or clear. The dining room staff never once offered coffee with dessert.

He watched until he thought I was out of sight and put it back. All I can say is I wash my hands before and after filling my plate. One day I got a cup of water, and didn’t realize until it was half empty that there was half of a sweetener packet stuck to the inside of the cup. The counters were always wet and ice was everywhere. Some “expert” passengers were (without prompting) lecturing others how to use the elevators, and sort of accusing everyone of doing it wrong by not pressing twice for two people.

Was disappointed with grand canal dining room at the seaside brunch absolutely cold eggs 2 times. Never went back   Dinner service was excellent and quick. Very impressed because I use a walker that I was let into the theatre early. Never happened on princess or holland America     Would never cruise out of nyc again. I did find there were always tables available in the buffet (usually also at the outdoor seating). It was nice that you didn't have to fight for a table.

And while that attempt keeps things small – human, even – it creates problems as the ship’s most popular spaces fill up early and stay that way. With Carnival Celebration, Carnival has started to bring more interesting décor in public spaces back, in a more modern (and perhaps accessible) way. These include the Miami-themed sandwich and pizza joints, Miami Slice and Deco Deli, on Deck 8 aft that channel the vibrant, often neon look found in Miami’s South Beach neighborhood. Nearby, Bar 820 offers up South Florida-themed cocktails and coffees in a clever space that includes indoor and outdoor seating. But Carnival’s new generation of ship, powered by cleaner-burning Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) technology, is also a ship of the future – and designers have thrown everything but the kitchen sink into its creation.

Attending the daily RedFrog Pub trivia quiz -- it's cumulative, so you play with the same people for the entire cruise for a more intimate experience. Sticking to off-hours for dining and getting up early for morning coffee helped, as did making Deck 5, with its four hot tubs and relatively underutilized lounge chairs, our sunning headquarters. The cheer of the crew also kept us going; with a room steward that brought us copious amounts of ice and towel animals, as well as an outgoing entertainment staff, it was hard to stay irritated for too long. For free eats, Carnival’s Lido Marketplace buffet on Deck 16 and its two main dining rooms – Festivale on Deck 6 and 7 aft, and Carnivale on Deck 6 midship – offer all the classic foods cruisers have come to expect. While the buffet is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, dining rooms tend to be dinner-only affairs, save for sea days when Carnival’s popular Sea Day Brunch (reservations required) is offered.

Also, the app does not provide practical info about things like gangway location, time changes, tendering process, disembarkation. Perhaps the paper does not have this info either, but I still prefer paper. Those looking for a comparable itinerary and family-friendly vibe without the crowds are often drawn to Royal Caribbean’s Mariner of the Seas, which is slightly bigger and carries fewer passengers. Cabins on Mariner are more stylish and family entertainment is somewhat more impressive, but prices can be a little bit higher on Royal Caribbean’s cruise liner. Carnival is a line that harmoniously brings people from all walks of life together. In elevators, when returning to the ship from port visits, in the eateries and at shows, by the pools — you name it — most guests, despite such varied backgrounds and identities, were happy to converse and share in the fun.

Most men, however, opt for long pants and collared shirts, while women don sundresses, or a skirt or pants with a blouse. Men are not required to wear a suit jacket or tie in any venue. The dining room dress code says no gym shorts, no baseball caps, and no sleeveless tee shirts on men, all of which is present, even on formal nights. It didn’t ruin my meal, but I thought people might try harder. Carnival relies heavily on comedians, most of which were good (but tastes vary). They could be more clear about which comedy shows were repeated sets.

Carnival Magic draws a diverse base, with passengers from all over the United States and even a few foreign countries (mostly Canadian, English and German tourists tacking on a cruise to their Florida vacation). You’ll see plenty of families and friends traveling together, most wearing matching cruise shirts. Many passengers struggle to decide between Carnival Magic and Carnival Breeze when looking at Caribbean itineraries. Both are Dream-class ships, which means they’re similar in size and offerings. However, Breeze has a cuter color palette in cabins and features an additional for-fee restaurant, Bonsai Sushi. Since the differences are pretty small, it will be down to price for most passengers.

Starting with Mardi Gras, Carnival began partnering with Holland America Line head chef, culinary pop artist and wacky raconteur Rudi Sodamin, to create Rudi’s Seagrill, a fabulous specialty dining venue where seafood dishes center stage. Most of Carnival’s staterooms are designed with families in mind, too. In a nod to Carnival’s history, cruisers will find plenty of objects onboard that have come from past ships. These include the original 1934 Rolls Royce Saloon car that sailed aboard Carnival Ecstasy until that ship was taken out of service, which now finds a home next to the entrance to the Golden Jubilee Bar. The cruise director, MarkQ, was great, and gave 110%.
